To assess the potential of its existing assets and surroundings, BIL organized a consultation by inviting ten Luxembourg architectural firms to present their vision for the future development of its historic site, located on the Maria Plateau in Luxembourg-Hollerich. Their proposals were expected to include the construction of a new headquarters, the renovation and repurposing of the existing building, as well as the creation of a high-quality natural environment. Moreover, the project had to align with a long-term vision, fully consistent with the urban development plans of the City of Luxembourg.
The winning project, designed by BFF…, embodies this responsible and innovative vision. It is based on the enhancement of the iconic PLM building, repurposed as residential units complemented by commercial functions, and the creation of a new headquarters with high environmental performance. This “adaptive reuse” of existing heritage illustrates a circular approach to construction, focusing on transformation rather than rebuilding.
The entire development is integrated into a vast natural landscape connecting Heintz Park to the Pétrusse Valley. Nature becomes the guiding thread of the project: it structures the spaces, permeates the architecture, and links the various functions in a continuous green flow. This biophilic design promotes a reconnection between humans and their environment, fostering well-being and creativity.
Thanks to its technical, architectural, and environmental performance, the project aims to achieve the highest levels of national and even international recognition. The goal is to obtain BREEAM Excellent, DGNB Platinum, and WELL Platinum certifications, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability and quality of work life. These distinctions highlight not only energy efficiency and a low carbon footprint, but also the health, comfort, and well-being of users, establishing the project as an exemplary and sustainable reference in today’s architectural landscape.
This innovative building combines contemporary architecture with the natural beauty of the site and perfectly reflects BIL’s values, positioning the bank as a visionary institution in terms of sustainability, circular economy, and social responsibility.
