Elementary School "Ëm de Bëchel"

This new school building is located in the south of the city, on the edge of the “Krakelshaff” park along the Promenade du Soleil, in an environment that is both close to nature and to the urban centre.

The volumes are positioned mainly to the north of the site, opening the buildings and playgrounds towards the park while protecting the neighbouring residential area from noise disturbances linked to children’s play. The overall layout respects the existing vegetation and fully preserves the biotope located on the eastern side of the site.

The theme of nature and water runs throughout the architectural concept, inspiring the choice of materials as well as the interior and exterior design.

In line with the “pädagogisches Raumfunktionsbuch” provided by the municipality during the competition, the project was designed from the inside out. The school cycles are organised into clusters: six classrooms form a functional unit around a flexible central area, offering a variety of spaces that encourage interaction and collaborative work between classes.

At the heart of the complex, a central foyer brings together the different clusters and other functions, such as the sports hall, which can be accessed independently outside school hours through a separate entrance leading directly to the changing rooms.

Specific rooms are also dedicated to thematic workshops — media and film, science or creative activities — as well as a library that enriches the learning environment.

Finally, the choice of materials and the overall design reflect a sustainable approach that prioritises health and environmental responsibility, aiming to reduce energy consumption and costs. The entire school complex thus seeks to achieve DGNB Gold certification.
